Robert Holdstock

Apparently Robert Holdstock died yesteday, unexpectedly.

Back in 1984 he wrote Mythago Wood, which won various awards and gave a major boost to his career, which until then had mainly consisted of pseudonymous horror novels, but later it seemed like his publishers only really wanted sequels to it. Apart from his Merlin Codex trilogy, I think he only published one novel afterwards that wasn’t connected…

But Mythago Wood was a wonderful book, and a key fantasy work of the period, and although the sequels were never quite as good as the original, the series brought a breath of fresh air and good writing to the genre, which is often taken for granted now…
