Charles N. Brown
The founder and mainstay of premier sf&f news magazine Locus died yesterday.
He founded the magazine over 40 years ago and I’ve been reading it (with a few gaps) for over 30 of them, from back when it was a slim pamphlet, almost, rather than the 76 page monthly it’s turned into.
I never met him to speak to, although I did speak to some of his staff at various cons they were covering, and a couple came by the shop here when Worldcon (or maybe Eurocon the following year) was last in Glasgow… He reviewed hundreds of books himself, and published reviews of thousands more, together with news, gossip and interviews with the key writers in the field since the late 60s.
Hope he had a good last meal; Locus used to finish regularly with a note of what the wrap party for that issue had to eat!
